GISMO

WHAT IS GISMO?

GISMO, General Integrated Science Museum Operations, is an idea that came about in response to the needs and abilities of students in Athena-Weston Middle School science classes. It is now an element of the science curriculum at the middle school.

WHAT DOES IT HOPE TO ACCOMPLISH?

The GISMO Student Science Museum is an attempt to establish a permanent hands-on science museum and learning center in Weston. It is the first such operation in the area and it is further distinguished by the fact that it is designed, constructed, and operated by students of the Athena-Weston SD. Working in collaboration with parents, teachers, community members, professionals, business, and other educational institutions, students develop exhibits and other resources to enhance understanding of scientific methods and knowledge. The program benefits our own students and also the community and region.

WHAT IS THE PRESENT STATUS OF THE PROJECT?

The City of Weston has donated space in the Weston City Hall for the museum. GISMO has received significant support from the Meyer Memorial Trust, Key Technology, Smith Frozen Foods, and Intel. The GISMO program has received numerous awards and other recognition for innovative instruction. Several middle school instructors are involved in the project. District land adjacent to the middle school is available for expansion of the project if funding can be developed.
